Mr Mandoo

A friend dropped off a tasty midday snack she picked up from downtown Honolulu. King mandoo from Mr Mandoo. I know you're thinking, Korean style potstickers or shumai. However these substantial snacks resemble Chinese char siu bao or manapua in Hawaii. They have the same type of outer steamed bun but that's where the similiarity ends. Whereas manapua or bao are primarily composed of bun with 1 to 2 tablespoons of filling - and often takes 2 bites before reaching the filling, King mandoo is composed of a thinner outer bun - just about 1/4 inch so that every bite is rewarded with a mouthful of filling. We had the Kim Chee - slightly sour, salty, spicy crunch of familiar pickled cabbage, the Vegetarian - chock full of vegetables and long rice though also containing shrimp (so not truly vegetarian), Kalbi - ground pork, vegetables and long rice with a sweeter soy based sauce and the Pork - same type of filling as the kalbi with a soy based sauce with a little more sesame flavor. I'm thinking about purchasing several for deep freeze when that King mandoo onos surface...
