Breakfast at Sakura

Had breakfast this morning at Sakura at the Olomana Golf Course with a coupla homies. The Golf Course had its 15 minutes of fame 2 years ago when then President-elect Obama played a couple of rounds of golf here and stopped by the restaurant for after-rounds snacks. It was a sunny though very hazy day due to the volcanic vog drifting from the Big Island. Since breakfast was at 8:30am, I did blow off my usual Saturday biking but found it difficult as Kalanianaole Highway is a major thoroughfare for the usual weekend peloton crews layin' down the pedal. Though skippin the weekly Sat cardio doesn't help the heart, occasional breakfast with the homies does feed the soul.

We started with the obligatory caffeinated beverages then progressed to a full round of Loco Moco's. Created on the Big Island years ago, it's food simplicity at its finest. Steaming rice topped with a hamburger patty then smothered in brown gravy and finally topped with two sunny side eggs. Rich, filing, salty, sometimes smoky but always good for the soul. Of course since Bruddah Neal was present, a side order of macaroni salad was the obligatory side order. Neal and I had the Loco Moco on fried rice instead of the usual white rice with sunny sides while the Nishida Clan opted for white or brown rice with over easy eggs.

Neal also ordered a side of their pancakes with basic syrup (they also offer banana pancakes or pancakes with sweet potato topping). Hey, if you're gonna carbo-load shoot the moon!

The Loco Moco was okay with a well done patty reminiscent of the hamburger steak from the old Chunky's Drive Inn (long gone) with a thick rich, slightly salty sweet brown gravy. The fried rice didn't add much - it was simply ok and the macaroni salad was also ok. The pancakes were very good and fatter than the usual breakfast joint with a nice crisp edge but light tender interior. The food here is ok and it is a nice place to get a round of 19th hole beverages though the rest of Saturday called so we made our exit...
