Vino as a 2nd choice...

We originally were supposed to attend a one-time dinner at The Pig and the Lady but those plans were postponed at the last minute for a couple of weeks. Therefore since everyone was rarin' to go, a suggestion was made to visit our 2nd home, Vino. Plan B but it still sounds good to me. We first had Chuck "blind" us on a tasting. Lighter red in color with leather, earth and a touch of tobacco on the nose so I immediately thought of Old World Sangiovese or Nebbiolo. Nice palate flow with a mid-palate hit of tannins immediately leading to good acid and a relatively short finish. The tannins would point to Nebbiolo over Sangiovese but the short finish couldn't be a Barolo or Barbaresco... Must be an aged Chianti Riserva or Brunello....

WRONG! According to Chuck, this is CLASSIC Barolo made the way it was in the old days (guess I won't quit that day job just yet...). Since a couple orders of the Foie Gras Sushi were placed, I immediately uncorked a 1985 Chateau Rieussec. Loads of apricot and caramelized stone fruit with underlying mineral and rich but not cloying on the palate and a long finish.

The Mrs selected the Vintage Steak

So I uncorked a 1985 Chateau Soutard from St Emilion which had earth, dried herb and tobacco on the nose with a pleasing palate flow and a medium finish and was great with the steak.

I selected one of the specials of the night, Lobster Mac-n-Cheese. The BOMB! With rich lobster flavor and little chunks of lobster meat. A Chardonnay or white Burg would have paired nicely but I "settled" with the 2002 Dom Perignon.

We also sampled a 2006 Paul Lato Fiddlestix Vineyard Pinot Noir with loads of ripe rich red fruit and Asian spice...

And more bubbly, 2005 LaSalle Cuvee Angeline

Along with more bubbles... and chocolates... Oh well, this wasn't exactly Plan A but I'll live with Plan Bs like this anytime...
