Since the Mrs wanted to visit the Shops at Wailea (and it also didn't seem to be raining in Wailea), we also decided to have a quick lunch at Peter Merriman's other restaurant on Maui (we dined twice at Merriman's in Kapalua about 3 years ago). So after making a couple of purchases, we waited for Monkeypod Kitchen to open for lunch. And since we're on vacation, we started with a round of cocktails with the Mrs selecting the Kula Cougar (I guess I am several younger than the Mrs) with Hendricks gin, Pimms #1, strawberry-ginger syrup and grapefruit bitters.
While I sampled Pistol Pete's Sazerac with Templeton Rye, Peychaud's bitters, honey and absinthe
We then started with the Garlic Truffle Oil Fries - a little too dark for my liking and a little limp.
The Mrs then had the Fresh Island Fish Sandwich featuring line caught mahimahi - the mahimahi was perfectly cooked!
While I indulged in the Bourgeois pizza with Big Island lobster and Hamakua mushrooms - perfectly cooked lobster added right before service.
And since beer and pizza are natural companions, I sampled the Duchesse de Bourgogne brew which must have been a "sour" beer because of the pronounced acid on the back end. FYI, they serve about 30 beer on tap served at 29 degrees.
The Mrs still had a little space so she tried the Chocolate Cream Pie with peanut crust and caramel sauce.
Would we return? Well, we don't have to as there also is a Monkeypod Kitchen on Oahu across the street from the Aulani resort in Ko Olina.
Then after lunch, we made a pit stop just down the street to visit Wailea Wine. Chuck Furuya mentioned several years ago to visit this shop if we ever were in Wailea. They do have an extensive selection of "boutique" wines like Leonetti, Kosta Browne, Saxum and Sine Qua Non though what I saw in the liquor section had me pushing my eyeballs back in their sockets...
Yes, you see that correctly and it's right on the shelf not even locked in a secured display case. The Mrs briefly contemplated making the purchase though I did let her know that neither of us is a serious Bourbon drinker and though there was no price tag, the cashier did let us know the owner procured the bottle and he also let us know what the going price was... only serious inquiries please...
