Yes, it was impromptu because the Mrs worked this weekend and we usually dine-in on those weekends. Because I'm tryin' to drop a little waist before our vacation, I also didn't cook anything extravagant plannin' on just havin' Morning Star veggie patties for dinner. But then Ms C texted me sayin' the K's were headed to Vino at 6:30pm and we could join them if we wanted to... As it turns out, the Mrs didn't have that bad of a day at work so she said "let's go"! Since we assumed the K's and maybe a few other regulars would be there, I carted a couple of bottles with me...
I started with my usual trio of wine samplers (Vino did refresh the Cruvinet with about half of the by-the-glass selections being new).
We then progressed to a little bubbly...
With some appetizers including the Fried Brussel Sprouts (a perpetual fave)...
The Burrata...
And we intended on having Chef Keith make a pizza of his choice for us. As it turned out, both Chuck and Chef Keith left early being 'under the weather"... so assistant chef Tate created a mushroom pizza complete with sunny side in the middle... this has GOT to go on the regular menu...
The K's uncorked a Fort Ross Sea Slope Pinot Noir
While K uncorked a 2006 Roso del Conte
And I uncorked a 2010 Leon Barral Faugeres Jadis... just a baby yet but needed more substance so moved on to the mains which included...
...the Fresh Crimini Mushroom Linguine... gotta love it! Another sunny side egg!
Along with a Vintage Steak sliced pupu style...
Then of course, who shows up? The I's who left the UH game early to take Jr to the airport... I felt a little bad since UH did win the game... or maybe they saw the whole game... But of course I had to uncork another bottle, a 1998 Michel Ganoux Pommard Rugiens 1er Cru Les Rugiens Bas. After the initial funk blew off, it was drinking quite nicely...
We also uncorked a Vilmart from Vino's cellar along with a Pol Roger from Ms K to end the night (as the K's always say, start and end the night with Champagne). So even if this was unexpected, it was a very nice evening with good friends... Of course, these little surprises in life make it all the more interesting...
