We finally decided to sample the food at Highway Inn... I say finally because we never tried the original location since it was located way over yonder in Waipahu and though the downtown location is readily accessible, we were more likely to go to Hank's Haute Dogs located just down the street. But they now offer several Loco Moco's so I had to sample the version with smoked meat...
First a POG Mimosa for the Mrs with POG (passion-orange-guava juice) and sparkling wine...
And a Big Swell IPA on tap from Maui Brewing Co for me...
I also had to sample the Danny Bishop Ho'io Salad - though the fern shoots were a drab olive green, they still retained a good crunch with tomatoes and cucumbers in a shoyu-vinegar sauce...
And the Mrs had to have their crinkle cut fries - nice and hot and very crisp with garlic and furikake - they also offer a truffle-cheese sauce on brown gravy on the fries...
The Mrs sampled the Ahi Tacos on taro tortillas (which kept the inner goodies from fallin' out) with salsa and purple potato chips...
And I had the Smok'n Moco on fried rice with Souza's lychee wood smoked meat with onions and peppers drizzled with smoked aioli...
Along with side of mac salad...
The Smok'n Moco more than lived up to the anticipation while the Mrs loved her Ahi Tacos and even brought back her leftover chips and crinkle fries. We'll probably be back on a Monday when they offer other Mocos like Uni and Ahi Tartare Moco... but that's another day...
