This post is several weeks late since the Mrs' B-Day was in May. But since the K's couldn't join us for dinner at the last Picnic on the Lanai at Kakaako Kitchen, we celebrated with them a week later at MW Restaurant.
The Mrs first sampled one of their newer cocktails, almost like the Cucumber Yuzu Fizz with strawberry puree.
We were also comped the Unagi and Butterfish Arancini which was great with house made tsukudani it sat on...
Because co-owner J Karr mentioned that Chef Wade is now using fresh butterfish (instead of the usual frozen), Monsieur K requested some butterfish sashimi... J came back to the table and said that since the fresh butterfish was only marinating for the past day, Chef Wade could accomodate his request... if you've never sampled fresh raw butterfish, you need to sample it! Like yesterday! All the rich flavor of butterfish with a hint of the miso marination...
I sampled the Coconut Kona Kampachi Ceviche... fatty richness balanced by a little heat in the coconut milk...
While the Mrs selected the special Mountain View Pork Dumpling... upscale dim-sum!
And C had the French Onion Soup...
And since it was a B-Day celebration, we uncorked a 1990 Henriot Cuvee des Enchanteleurs... definitely hitting that tertiary stage with with stone fruit cobbler flavors with a touch of truffle...
We also uncorked a 1985 Cos de Estournel since three on the table ordered the special 16oz True Natural Brandt Brand Beef Ribeye Steak... Though this bottle was almost 32 years old, it was just beginning to hit its plateau still with red fruit, green tobacco and dried herbs with a long finish...
I was the only diner who selected the Mountain View Farms Pork Loin with kalamungay pesto and pork belly ragout...
And of course, the meal isn't complete for the Mrs until she also samples dessert including the Hawaiian Crown "Banana Cream Pie"...
The MW Candy Bar...
Cookies and Cream...
And the Mrs' birthday cake... ok, it wasn't a cake but Chef Karr-Ueoka's mango shave ice (her shave ice is also now available The Street, a Michael Mina Social House at the International Marketplace in Aloha Ice).
So Happy Birthday to the Mrs, hopefully there will be many more in the future!
