Dinner @ Threadfin Bistro

At the end of last year, I contacted a friend who we regularly socialized with pre-COVID (ie, we dined with her at Vino on a regular basis) but since the pandemic, haven't broken bread since that time. We keep up through social media but haven't met face-to-face for over 3 years. So we decided on dinner... actually I suggested the Happy Hour at Little Joe's but she decided on Threadfin Bistro. Threadfin Bistro originally opened in 2022 as a catering company by Chef Jason Kiyota who previously ran The Food Company in Kailua but started offering Prix Fixe three course meals in 2023 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 5:30pm to 8:00pm. I normally avoid anything on Kapahulu Avenue as parking is often very limited but Threadfin Bistro is located at the Kilohana Square which has adequate parking spaces just for their clients. As of this post, they still are BYOB while they await their liquor license. The entry is off of the interior parking (not the streetside)...
The bistro is on the smaller side seating between 24 to 30 diners at a time which includes 4 bar style seating and an elevated 6-top table...
This dinner was their Fall Mushroom Dinner...
Starting with the Lion's Mane Mushroom Cake which had a nice balance between the Romesco sauce and smoky bonito shavings...
The next course was the Chicken of the Woods Mushroom Piccata which paired fried mushrooms almost like a vegetarian calamari with the briny capers balanced by a rich, creamy lemon butter sauce on greens...
This was followed by Porcini Crusted Ahi on an olive and pepper sauce topped with tomato marmalade. Again the olives provided the briny flavors balanced the sweet and sour marmalade with the porcini powder giving a touch of earthiness...
The last savory course was the Local Venison on a Huckleberry Sauce with White Chanterelles with Farro. Game always pairs well with berry based sauces especially with meaty mushrooms between bites...
Dessert was a pumpkin(?) olive oil cake(?)... sorry I wasn't paying attention and concentrating on the wines we brought...
Which inclded both a 2011 Abbatucci General de la Revolution which includes 6 native Corsican grape varietals with vine planted in the 1960s...
And one of my favorite Pinot Noir producers, a 2013 Littorai Savoy Vineyard from Anderson Valley...
All in all, it was a great meal with excellent service so yes, we'll be back!
