Proprietor Terry Cheung opened his first dim sum restaurant - Kapiolani Seafood Restaurant - in the original MW Restaurant space in September 2022. He simply wanted a place to host friends to eat and relax as his primary occupation is in the construction business. Then just before the Lunar New Year, he opened his second restaurant - Honolulu Seafood Restaurant - in the original Yong Sing (if you're aged like me) or the Mandalay Restaurant space on Alakea St. And just 9 days ago, opened the Kaneohe Dim Sum Station at the Windward City Shopping Center just across from McDonalds. So we decided to pay our first visit this morning... The current two page menu lookslike this...
For starters, they are experiencing slight "growing pains" as they open at 10:30am but the steamed items may not be ready until 11:00am or so. And I heard from some of the repeat customers that they will run out of many items after the first couple of hours. Plus Kaneohe's last dim sum restaurant was Eartern Garden (currently the Starbucks and Jamba Juice building) so K-Town residents have been jonesin' for dim sum in the neighborhood for quite a while so production issues may take a couple of weeks to iron out... We started with the Shrimp Fried Rice ($17.50) which took quite a while to come out of the kitchen but it had a fair amount of plump shrimp - not tiny Bay shrimp and wasn't salty at all...
We also sampled the Onion Pan Fried Bun ($8.50) - pork and lots of green onion in a steamed bun that was then pan fried to crisp the top and bottom...It was very good!
We both agreed that the Shrimp Dumplings or har gow ($6.50) was as good as any on the island with plump, juicy shrimp and a thin covering...
Another stellar dish was the Bean Curd Roll with Pork ($6.50), especially the "gravy" that it was sitting in...
The Shrimp Look Funn ($8.50) also contained large, juicy morsels of shrimp...
Ms S also enjoyed the Pan Fried Turnip Cakes ($6.50) as they were very tasty and large...
The only selection that I might not order again is the Seafood Bean Curd Roll ($6.50) - it was very tasty but because it seemed deep fried, a little greasy...
Of course, we had to sample this with a little vino... a 2021 Domaine Dupeuble Rose...
However, we'll return once the hype dies down and sample some of the other selections like Ginger & Garlic Steamed Tripe, Seafood Seaweed Rolls and Custard tarts. I also like what I assume is the owners caricature flashing the peace/victory sign while holding a bottle of Opus One...
