Just Another Trip to Marukai

Whenever we have an errand in town, we usually make a stop at Marukai before heading back to K-Town. Pan Pacific Retail Management Hawaii which operates a conglomeration of stores in the 50th - Don Quijote, Times Supermarkets, Marukai, Tokyo Central, Shima's, Big Save and Fujioka's Wine Times - used to keep the individual identities of each store distinct. However, you can now find Japanese items at Times and many items listed on their weekly sales are available at all stores. But the one thing missing from the Times Kaneohe location is freshly prepared sushi - the Tokyo Central in Kailua does have freshly prepared sushi but in my old age, even a 30 minute drive seems like going on a neighbor island flight. And in the past year, Marukai has had a sushi section with freshly prepared sushi - not just prepackaged trays as in times past. So we usually pick-up one tray of their Chuu-toro Nigiri Sushi which is almost a fatty as the Otoro without any of the sinew sometimes found in Otoro...
The Hamachi Nigiri Sushi is also spot on with a taste and quality almost as good as sushi restaurants...
And we always get a tray of the Salmon Nigiri Sushi...
They also have specials like the Aburi Salmon...
And the Scallop Dynamite...
And since great sushi requires a great beverage, Marukai's sake section is just around the corner with three of my favorite Daiginjo sake... Dassai 45...
Dassai 39...
And for special occasions, Dassai 23...
I will make occasional trips to Tokyo Central in Kailua when we don't have any errands in town but have a errand or two in Kailua...
