Vigne di Mezzo Efesto 2002: Established by the founders of the Feudi di San Gregorio estate in 2000, Efesto is made from that noble red grape of Southern Italy; Aglianico. Dark ruby red in color with a nose of dark red fruits and wet stone and concentrated on the palate with red fruit, stone and a touch of mocha with very firm tannins. Easily can age another 10 years. Definitely for the heartiest of red meats.
Varnier-Fanniere Blanc de Blanc Brut NV: Another of the small grower-producer Champagne houses. This pure Chardonnay from 60+ year old vines had a nose of lemon and biscuit with a moderately concentrated palate of lemon curd and a hint of baked apple with a moderately long finish. Very good.
Relic Alder Springs Mendocino Pinot Noir 2002: With a refined nose of cola, dried strawberry and underbrush, subdued red fruit on the palate and a moderate finish. Now only if Michael Hirby & Schatzi Throckmorton would use smaller (standard) bottles that fit in your average wine rack…
Ca’Marcanda Promis 2004: Primarily Merlot with Syrah and Sangiovese blended into the mix, this is probably the closest I’ll get to drinking Gaja. Very concentrated red cherry and pebble on the nose with fleshy red fruit on the palate and a very long finish.
