Williams Selyem

Opened my last bottle of Burt Williams & Ed Selyem produced Pinot Noir. The 1995 Russian River Pinot Noir to be exact. Purchased along with two bottles of Williams Selyem Chardonnay at a silent wine auction, I almost forgot about it in the recesses of my storage unit. At fourteen years old, I didn’t know what to expect since many California Pinot Noirs start fading at that 7 or 8 year mark. This bottle was almost double that (Wine Spectator gave it 90 point in 1997) though it was stored in pristine conditions.

The color was a true burgundy with the purplish hue a long gone memory though still without tinges of brick red. The nose was a perfumed balance of dried red fruit, a touch of earth and a hint of spice and nutmeg. The balanced aromas carried through onto the palate with a seamless flow. The finish was quite short and unfortunately accentuated the acid which was not balanced by fruit or velvety tannins on the finish. Still a great wine though, well deserved of its 90 point score by WS. Only wish I had several bottles to spare.
