The Alley at Aiea Bowl

Had dinner at the Alley at Aiea Bowl. Very good french fries, thin cut like Kua Aina with a crisp but not greasy exterior and tender core. I asked our server for tartar sauce with the fries (I'm a mayo kinda guy when it comes to french fry accoutrements). The four of us couldn't finish a large serving of the fries...

I had the Braised Asian Pork aka Shoyu Pork. Tender chunks or pork with smaller flaked off goodies that soaked the sauce. Nice balance of sweet, salty and savory without being overly salty that often happens with shoyu based braising liquids. I opted for brown rice but had the mac salad instead of the green salad (hey, the brown rice provided more fiber than salad greens would). Typical flavorful mac salad with a touch of onion but not overly dressed in mayo.

The Mrs had a mix plate with Loco Moco and the Alley's famous Tasty Chicken. Since we just had Ruby Tuesday's Loco Moco the night before (with USDA Prime beef cooked perfectly medium rare), the Alley's version paled a little in comparison. Though it was still tender (hate it when hamburger patties get compressed and cooked to hockey puck consistency) and like RT's, the egg was done over easy (legal eagles need to keep their legal opinions out of Loco Moco's, there are antibiotics that can treat Salmonella if it happens).
The Tasty Chicken was basically slightly crisper chicken karaage with a nice shoyu-garlic sauce. Nice crunch and nice balance of sweet, salty and savory.

Sis had the Boneless Kalbi which was as good as any kalbi I've tried in any Korean restaurant. Very tender and cooked medium to medium rare. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, a perfect balance of sweet, salty and savory... and no bones to fuss with, just tender morsels of meat.
