This Eve we skipped the usual party and decided on visiting Vino for Chuck Furuya's aged wine tasting (the next column). That meant the usual party at our house was bypassed... just for 3 days that is. It actually was a lot more relaxing having the New Year's Eve party after the fact. No last minute house cleaning on the same day as preparing enough food for a small army, no need to worry about placing flowers on the family alter, no unwanted smoke from illegal fireworks. And still one day to recover... we should do this more often!
Started the evening with a 1999 Nicolas Feuillatte Blanc de Blanc. We then proceeded to a 1998 Pasanau Priorat Finca La Planeta then a 2002 Testarossa Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noir. The evening ended with 2001 Luna Mille Baci late harvest Pinot Grigio and some Ginjo sake. Of course, there were loads of grinds with each wine; Pea & Smoked Almond Salad, Broccoli Tomato Pasta Salad, Ahi Sashimi, Ahi Poke, Fried Tofu Poke, Layered Crab Pan Sushi, Corn and Garbanzo Salad, Andouille Jambalaya, Konbu Chicken, Breaded Shrimp, Pork Meatball Banh Mi, Kim Chi Braised Beef Shortribs and if you had room after that, assorted Cheesecake from Otto's in Chinatown.
Did we make tooo much foood? Of course! Will we do it again? Naturally! Maybe a couple days after the fact again too.... A voitre sante and shinmen akemashite omedetou gozaimasu!
