Tried a couple of different sake the past month in a wide range of styles. The first was Tsukasabotan Junmai sake which was a middle of the road. Hints of tropical fruit on the nose though not at the level of that perfumy quality with a medium body and shorter finish. This would pair with most Japanese or Chinese cuisine as long as it wasn't spicy or too rich.
Next up was the Taihei-Zan Kimoto Junmai sake. Definitely on the hearty end of the sake meter starting with the golden hue and full, barazushi nose like hot rice mixed vinegar and sugar. Also full on the palate with earthy notes. Definitely could stand up to full flavored dishes including bleu cheese (I once had celery stuffed with bleu cheese paired with a hearty sake and the bleu cheese wasn't the dominant flavor sensation on the palate). Cold night, steaming chanko nabe and Taihei-Zan Kimoto...
Finally, the finesse of the trio, Meibo Yowano Tsuki "Midnight Moon" sake. With a perfumed nose of papaya, lime and tropical flowers (not unlike Dewazakura) but a glycerin like richness on the palate (just a tad below Yuki no Bosha) and a medium-full finish, this was a treat to sip!
All sake were purchased from Marukai for less than $30 - I don't remember the exact prices but they were in the $25 range.
