Market Fresh Bistro in Makawao

Since we were nestled in Kaanapali for our stay-cation, I didn't feel the need to travel too far outside of the confines of Lahaina... However this trip was for the Mrs and she felt like trying breakfast at Market Fresh Bistro in Makawao so I pulled on the bootstraps and headed upcountry.

Started a little over 2 years ago by a New York couple who brought a brother in tow (the chef), the restaurant practices the locavore approach in obtaining ingredients from within a 100 mile radius. In fact about 80% of their food comes straight from Maui itself. They offer pre-set dinners every other Thursday and despite buying local, try to keep prices reasonable. Dinner sounded great but we were here for just another day so dinner would have to wait for another trip. Today is breakfast.

I chose the Smoked Salmon Benedict made with local organic eggs. Of course, eggs Benedict are akin to classical music. The music is already proven so just don't mess it up! Something about a salty protein on a toasted carb covered with a rich Hollandaise and perfectly poached egg... And of course, this version wasn't messed up. Just a symphony in the mouth!

The Mrs opted for the Frittata which included chorizo, eggplant, peppers and potatoes with a simple green salad. This version was as light as they come, almost quiche-like with nice balance of savory, herbal and rich.

We also purchased a brownie to go - a large 5" x 5" brownie that we had as an early pre-dinner dessert. Though I still want to sample one of their Thursday dinners...but that will have to wait for a future trip back to the Valley Isle...
