We didn't plan on making a trip to Vino yesterday but since I had to go in to work today, thought I might as well enjoy the one day off. We started with something different instead of the usual Duo of Sushi. We had an order of the Foie Gras Sushi and an order of the Spicy Tuna. I paired these with a taste of the 2009 Masaretti Pigato which had loads of citrus and mineral and the 2009 Planeta La Segreta which had a little richer body for the foie gras.
The Foie Gras Sushi was great as usual with quite a large slice of foie gras.
The Spicy Tuna was served in soup spoons over shoyu flavored rice with bits of taegu topping it.
We then selected the special of the evening; a Sous Vide Pork Belly then crisp fried with haricot vert and handmade pasta. Ooooooo! So rich, succulent and tender. A contrasting crisp exterior and succulent interior with al dente pasta and beans. This SHOULD go on the regular menu!
I paired this dish with a 2008 Columbo Les Abeilles Cote du Rhone and a 2007 Autonom which is a domestic blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. The fruit in the Autonom was highlighted (like it needed help in that respect) by the pork though an aged Pinot Noir probably would have paired a lot better.
We then proceeded to repeats, the Dungeness Crab ala Chitarra with Lobster-Uni Sauce (paired with a Broadside Chardonnay).
And the Big Island Smoked Pork with homemade fettuccine (pairedwith a Gamay noir)
We ended the meal with the Banana Mousse Cake and a quad of sorbets.
Of course, the meal was over but the evening was far from it since a couple of Vino regulars stopped by so I uncorked a bottle of 1978 Chateau Ripeau from St Emilion. Herb, mocha and tobacco on the nose with silky tannins and a smooth finish.
The K's and B uncorked a 2001 Rafael Cabernet Sauvignon while the I's had a bottle of Zinfandel that Chuck added to the Vino wine list. Chuck even popped a bottle of La Spinetta Le Pin...
Another great night at Vino...
