Wine Night @ Vino

Isn't every night wine night at Vino? I mean, Vino does translate to "wine". And the wine prices are always very good just a little more than you would expect to pay at retail. However a couple of times a year, Chuck Furuya does a "Wine Night" where he prices full bottles at or below retail. You do need to be on Vino's e-mail list as even as Wine Night arrives, the special prices aren't advertised to every patron in the restaurant, just those "in the know". We started the evening with a bottle of 2006 Fichet Auxey Duresses with loads of minerality on the nose and palate not unlike a Chablis then evolving stone fruit that eventually appeared on the palate with a medium finish.

We paired the Fichet with a Fried Akule with Olive Tapenade and White Beans. The acid in the wine cut through the oily flesh of the akule while the earthiness of the olive and beans brought out the fruit in the wine.

We also sampled Roasted Mary's Organic Chicken on white beans and jus. Once again, the Fichet paired perfectly with the roasted bird even helping balance the salty crisp skin.

The Mrs also wanted to sample the Pan Seared Hudson Valley Foie Gras on brioche topped with duck proscuitto. She enjoyed the Fichet with this dish though I think a glass of Birbet would have paired nicely with its sweet-tart flavors.

Since the I's were in the house (and we haven't seen them for quite a while), I uncorked a bottle of 1996 Paolo Scavino Cannubi Barolo which had loads of leather and red cherry with hints of tar and licorice and a very long finish.

We paired this with the Fresh Linguini with Sweet Fennel Sausage and Chard.

Along with a Salumi & Cheese platter.

The only negative to the evening was that Chef Hiroshi wasn't allowing any of Hiroshi's food to be served on the Vino side of the restaurant. What gives?! We usually always start the evening with the Duo of Sushi from Hiroshi and end with one of their desserts. I mean, they are basically the same restaurant just with separate themed dining areas... Oh well, we'll just have to get our sushi fix at some other establishment from now...
