Prima Revisited

Okay, I know it appears that we had dinner at Prima on consecutive evenings. Not the case. The dinners were actually separated by 5 days. But we just HAD to sample some of the other menu selections that we didn't sample on the first round. The Mrs once again did order the aperitif of Prosecco with St Germain elderflower liqueur.

I however tried something different, the Brazilian Purple Lady which was a concoction of gin, Jaboticaba and lemon. Jaboticaba is a type of Brazilian grape hence the purple tinge. The drink was like an adult lemonade.

We then proceeded to the Oven Roasted Radicchio with Parmesan. Radicchio is one of my favorites veggies and roasting them brings out the sweetness to balance the slightly bitter bite. It's also a great palate cleanser for richer dishes.

The special Dominican Sancoccho Soup with shredded pork and various potatoes in a chicken broth garnished with pepitos. I heard that Prima tries to offer a different soup every day of the year and this soup was a cross between soup and stew with a hearty richness.

We also sampled the special German Potato Salad Gnocchi. Seasoned with mustard and mustard seeds like a potato salad but with tender gnocchi instead of potatoes and house cured bacon and slices of bockwurst. The fried onion rings gave a textural contrast to the soft gnocchi and the celery leaves added color and a little herbal bite to contrast the other flavors. We sampled it as an appetizer but it was hearty and filling enough to be a main course.

I then sampled a glass of 2007 Feudo di Santa Tresa Nivuro which is a Sicilian blend of Nero d'Avola and Cabernet with dark ripe fruit on the nose and palate and pleasing medium finish.

The Mrs selected the Pappardelle with Curried Bolognese and fried curry leaves which featured perfectly cooked pasta and a hearty Bolognese.

While I sampled the Chicken Fried Sweetbreads and Biscuits. It looked good on paper and it looked good on the plate but it was difficult to eat. Of the four pieces served, only 1 piece could be perfectly sampled. When I sliced the other 3 pieces, the crisp batter scooted one way and the naked morsel of sweetbread scooted the other way so it was difficult to get that perfect bite of everything at once. And because sweetbreads don't have much flavor on their own and light brown gravy doesn't either (along with white biscuits), if it wasn't for the pickles there wouldn't have much flavor to the dish.

We also ordered a side of the Roasted Fingerling Potatoes which still held their heat well into dinner but were perfectly cooked and seasoned.

Of course, once again we were stuffed so that we had to pass on dessert and though the sweetbreads didn't live up to expectations, we'll be back... though maybe not in 5 days again. We'll wait at least a week.
