Okay, normally we don't make any effort to do the Valentine's Day thing especially if it falls on a weekday but a classmate from my grad school days in the Bay Area was visiting Hawaii for the first time so I secured a table at Hiroshi... or so I thought. When I arrived, I found out that the table was actually at Vino... which wasn't a bad thing since their pre-set multi-course meal was $48 versus $59 or $62 at Hiroshi. I started with a glass of Prosecco:
While the Mrs selected the Lychee Gin Fizz and G went with a Hendricks and Tonic. This was the multi-course served that evening:
Roasted Fingerling Potato
with truffled cauliflower puree, crème fraiche
& osetra caviar
This was a great starter dish with a luscious truffled cauliflower puree
that begged to be sopped up with bread
Roasted Candy Striped Beets
with haricot vert, candied walnuts, currant
tomatoes & Champagne vinaigrette
Roasted beets are always good and this was no exception
Butter Poached Kona Cold
Lobster
with Kahuku corn & ricotta cheese ravioli
& lobster-uni sauce
Butter poached lobster is always good but
the lobster-uni sauce made the dish
Braised Horseradish Crusted Short
Rib
with homemade porcini linguine, root
vegetables & black truffle demi
Short rib tender enough to flake just with the fork tines.
Adding a touch of truffle kicked it to another level!
Kula Strawberry Panna Cotta & Chocolate
Gelato
with fresh berry garnish & lemoncello
zabaglione
What can I about strawberries and chocolate?
A great way to end the meal!
We also had Chuck select a "mystery" wine for us, on this evening it was a 2011 Maxime Magnon Corbieres Rozeta which is a Carignon blend with a nose like a fine Beaujolais but with a mixture of black and red fruit in balance with earth and acid and a medium finish. Chuck said he only received 1 case of this wine after trying for "years" to secure an allocation. Another great meal and of course, we'll be back!
