Since it's been about a year and a half since my last meal at town (the Mrs hasn't been here for several years), it was put on our agenda for our staycation. I looked forward to Chef Kenney's salumi platter but alas, it wasn't on the menu this evening. I started with a Black and Orange or bourbon with Cynar, orange liqueur and Carpano Antica.
The Mrs HAS to have her french fries and town didn't disappoint with their version - thin crisp and served with an aioli.
We also had the Head Cheese Pate with assorted pickles. No folks, this isn't the head cheese you find at the supermarket. Porky, earthy and good balanced with the acid from the pickles. Chef Kenney is a master at creating top notch salumi!
We also sampled the Mozzarella with Guanciale (basically like bacon that's not smoked), Figs and Greens
And the Pai'ai with Imu Cooked Beef
With a 2010 Heba or Tuscan Morellino di Scansano (the small black Sangiovese) blended with Syrah. this wine had loads of fresh red cherry with a little earth.
And a 1998 M. Sorrel Hermitage Blanc. I love aged Rhone whites almost as much as aged white Burgundy. More baked stone fruit and a little less mineral but pair-able with loads of different foods.
For our main courses we had the Kulana Steak Frite. The first time the Mrs ordered the Kulana Beef, she thought it was a little tough. This version was very tender and flavorful.
The BBQ Shinsato Pork Leg with Bitter Greens and Polenta. Very good pork flavor and very tender!
The Gnocchi with Hamakua mushrooms and brown butter. They still only make 12 servings of gnocchi at dinner and these are as good as they come.
And the Risotto with Shinsato Pork
We finished with a Flourless Chocolate Tarte
And a Panna Cotta
While I sampled a glass of Amaro Montenegro - a little bitter and a little sweet digestivo.
I don't know what took us so long to return to town but I guarantee it won't take another year and a half again...
