I just learned of the passing of a friend I met primarily through the multiple food and wine events held at Vino. About 6 years ago, Chuck held the first BYOBs in the back room of Hiroshi and participants were simply instructed what type of wine to bring and that said wine should be wrapped so that the tasting could be blinded. They started the tasting at 9:30pm since service at both restaurants wasn't as hectic. It was a shock for the T's to actually leave our house at 8:30pm or so (we normally would be headed home at that time) to start the night.
It was at these tastings that we met Susan and John. They were another version of Martin and Lewis or Rowan and Martin or Abbott and Costello. Though John seemed reserved, he was the funny guy while Susan played the straight role. And boy did they enliven the room!
Since that time, we were fortunate to share countless bottles of wine over countless meals with great conversation and laughter. It also didn't hurt that Susan and I seemed to have the same political philosophies. I know that controversial topics like religion and politics shouldn't get in the way of a friendship but it does make it simpler if you do have the same political leanings... the last thing you want to do is inadvertently make fun of a politician that someone else just voted for and believe me, that "other" party has quite a bit of characters to dis...
So I'm grateful for the times we did share together. That glass or bottle of wine. Those Vino meals. And the camaraderie. I'll always cherish those memories. Aloha Susan my friend. You're not here now but you'll always be here...
