On Thursday, we attended the Interesting Sparkling Wine tasting at Vino which looked like this:
Punta Crena Mataossu Spumante Brut
grown on the steep, rocky hillsides of Liguria, undergoes ML & secondary fermentation
& aged on the lees for 10 months. This grape is grown by only 1 family in 1 village.
.
Raventos I Blanc Brut Rose “De Nit”
FOUR indigenous Spanish grape varieties grown in limestone influenced soils.
Methode Champenoise. This family has been doing this for 19 generations!!!!!
.
Lambert de Seyssel “Royal Seyssel”
a VERY unique bubbly from the Savoie region (limestone-clay soils), at higher elevation.
Typically 50% each of Molette & Altesse grape varieties, 3 to 4 years on the less & done method traidionelle,
just as they would in Champagne. Many believe this region was one of the first to produce bubblies
this way….even before Champagne itself.
“L’Altesse is the historic grape of the area for sparkling wines, and it has existed here since 1393. Its name translates to ‘Highness,’
which I guess makes sense in a place like Savoie. Wines from Altesse are remarkable for their aromatic finesse, elegance, and great
aging potential. A second grape called Molette is what they consider the key to Royal Seyssel's success. It is a native Savoie variety, descended
from Gouais, with small compact clusters and tiny berries of golden yellow and remarkable acidity. They are a perfect combo for a vin Clair.”
.
Veuve Fourny Brut “Grande Reserve”
70% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir…Premier Cru… 2 ½ years ageing, 30% in Burgundy barrels.
This family owned House looks for elegance, purity & fine-ness.
I've tried the Veuve Fourny before and always felt it was a great Champagne but the first three sparklers blew my palate away! From the balance in the Punta Crena to the fine mousse in the Raventos to the new flavor sensations in the Seyssel. A great tasting! We also sampled two specials for the evening, Chef Keith's take on Paella almost like a cross between paella and risotto.
And the Braised Short Rib with fettucine. Alas, I had my leftovers boxed but forgot it at the restaurant.
Extra credit for the evening included these bottles:
Then last night, the Mrs decided that she had a bad day at work so we sampled Chef Keith's Italian Street Food menu. We started with a bottle of 2005 Grand Regnard Chablis.
Which worked perfectly with the Jumbo Lumb Crab Arancini
We also sampled the Wagyu Bresaola Carpaccio with capers, tomatoes and micro greens from the regular menu
With a bottle of 2010 Joncier Les Muses Lirac
We also tried the Pork and Vela Sausage Pizza with roasted red pepper aioli (the Mrs favorite dish of the evening and she usually isn't a big pizza fan).
Along with a 2009 Ott and Murphy Columbia Valley Syrah
And the Grilled Ligurian Style Skirt Steak Bruschetta. As tender as steak gets like buttah with the steak juices soaked up by the bruschetta....
We also shared a bottle of the Seyssel with the next table to round out the meal along with a 2000 Quintarelli Ca' del Merlo
And finished with a Negroni
Not exactly back to back - one day of rest in between - but Vino has always been a second home to us...
