Mom's B-Day was last week so we took her out for the usual meal though this year it was a little different. Since Sis-n-law took her to Jade Dynasty for Mother's Day, she said she wanted dim sum again. Which is way off the norm. Mom usual likes deep fried and spicy, hence her usual selection is Chili's. Which I was prepared to do since I do enjoy their Top Shelf margarita. But it was dim sum this year. So where to? She already had Legends dim sum several years back and just had Jade Dynasty. Mei Sum doesn't take reservations so that's a big negative. How about the Cultural Plaza. Yelp has all 3 dim sum restaurants in the top ten. Let's try Fook Lam!
Whenever visiting any dim sum joint, we always order a large plate of something... just so you don't pig out on the little plates between the cart visits. We ordered the Dual White Sauce and Tomato Sauce Fried Rice.
Then sampled in no particular order, the Steamed Boneless Chicken Bao
The Steamed Shrimp Dumpling (har gau)
Steamed Scallop and Spinach Dumpling
Bean Curd Roll (always one of my favorites)
Steamed Mini Glutinous Dumplings (another of my favorites)
Fried Spring Rolls
Spare Ribs with Black Bean
Fried Seaweed Rolls (my absolute favorite... or one of them at least)
Shanghai Dumplings filled with broth (I had to let mine cool before even attempting to consume)
Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce
Steamed Fish Balls (fish cakes... not their gonads)
And for the Mrs, the Custard Tarts (dan tat)
And Baked Sweet Potato Cakes
The Mrs actually took her desserts off the cart well before we even started eating (just in case they run out). The dim sum was good though no epiphanies here (like Jade Dynasty's seasoned beef shank) and I have accepted the fact that Mom can't eat like she used to. In fact, I was scarfing like a demon just to finish Mom's "halves" - the server cut the rolls in half and Mom would only take one half "refusing" the other half. It also didn't help that Mom ALWAYS has breakfast before we go out because she's "always had breakfast every morning"... even if she's about to partake in a $200 per person buffet. But I can't change that so I won't even attempt it. But Hauoli la hanau Mom! Hope you liked the dim sum lunch... wishing you many more...
