This post is a sukoshi bit tardy as the Champagne BYOB at Vino happened last Saturday but since it was a table with good friends, I had to do a post about the evening. Chuck sent out the e-mail about a month earlier in his weekly e-mail and for the first time, the BYOB was centered around Champagne! As the character in "The Deer Hunter" stated, "A man who says no to Champagne says no to life..." so you know we're there! The menu looked like this:
Amuse Bouche
Chilled Kampachi Tartare
served with Big Island hearts of palm & poha beries
First Course
Poached Stellar Bay Oysters,
served with pickled shallots, Molokai sweet potato gnocchi
RECOMMENDED WINES: Bubblies with some Pinot Meunier
Second Course
Charred Kona Maine Lobster
served with Kahuku Corn panna cotta & tarragon lemon buerre blanc
RECOMMENDED WINES: Blanc de Blanc in style
Entrée
“Surf & Turf”
olive oil poached tuna, braised shortrib angollotti, charred Haaula tomato
RECOMMENDED WINES: Blanc de Noirs in style
Dessert
Kula Strawberry Tart
served with Naked Cow Dairy goat cheese, La Gelateria strawberry gelato
We started formally with several bottles to taste with the amuse bouche... then all _ell broke loose! We started the evening with a bottle of Collet Esprit Couture Brut to whet our whistles...
Then moved on to a Pierre Peters Blanc de Blanc Grand Cru from Les Mesnil
Ariston Aspasie Cepages d'Antan made from the original grapes in the Champagne region, Petit Meslier, Arbanne and Pinot Blanc.
And a Deutz Brut
For the Chilled Kampachi Tartare
Then moved on to a 2000 Billecart-Salmon Cuvee Billecart Brut
A 2004 Duval-Leroy Clos des Bouveries Brut
And a 1999 Pol Roger Blanc de Blanc
For the Poached Stellar Bay Oysters
Progressing to a Charles Heidsieck Rose and 2004 Roederer L-Ermitage
For the Charred Kona Maine Lobster
Rounding out with a 2000 Dumangin Cuvee Hippolyte Blanc de Pinot Noir
Along with a Vilmart Cuvee Rubis
For the "Surf and Turf"
We also sampled a Taittinger Sec with dessert (forgot to photo) for the Kula Strawberry Tarte
Then finished the evening with several tetes including a 1998 Krug and a 2004 Bollinger Grand Annee Rose
It was another great BYOB though I obviously missed a bunch of photos... that's what invariably happens with loads of bubbles. We already plan on having our own Tete de Cuvee BYOB in the next month or two reminiscent of The Wine Stop's old tete tastings...
