After picking up a little more cooking ingredients in Kahului, we headed to Paia for lunch. Personally, I've never seen so much rain on Maui! And though the Mrs tried purchasing an umbrella at Safeway (the cashier wasn't sure if they carried umbrellas but said she's never rung one up at her register), there wasn't any to be found... even at Longs. So here we were ducking under every eave to escape the rain and we still couldn't find our lunch spot. So we headed back to the car and headed up Baldwin Ave to Makawao and low and behold, there was Dazoo just before leaving Paia town! The Mrs started off with a cocktail - the Wild as the Sea with gin, white wine, lemon, lavender, strawberry, mint and cranberry juice. Whew!
While I sampled a Dazoo Bellini with strawberry (it also came with pineapple). We both agreed that her cocktail was WAY better than mine...
We then sampled the Patatas Bravas. Wow! Killer doubled fried potatoes served with a spicy chojang sauce and house made aioli. Crisp on the outside and flaky within. I could have had a large plate just as my meal!
We also tried the Scallion Flatbread with soy-nori dipping sauce. No food epiphany, it was just ok.
And the Kalua Pork Stuffed Mochi - another GREAT dish! Kalua pig surrounded by soft mochi that was pan fried for a crisp exterior and chewy interior served with either the spicy chojang or hoisin BBQ sauce. I told our server that I planned on copying this dish at home.
The Mrs then tried the Banh Mi with Mary's chicken - I also enjoyed this sandwich because the bread was softer than the usual Vietnamese baguette that tends to cut your upper palate.
While I sampled the Bi Bim Bap with bulgogi but instead of thin ribeye, Dazoo uses very tender cubes of marinated beef and they serve it in a hot stone bowl to crisp the rice on the bottom.
The Bi Bim Bap and Banh Mi allow you to choose your protein - either tofu, kalua pork, mary's chicken breast, Kauai prawns, fresh catch of the day or bulgogi.
The Mrs still had a little space so she purchased a cup cake from their bakery window - a chocolate pumpkin cupcake with Chai buttercream.
Would we return? Definitely, since Dazoo does a great job of Korean-Asian fusion!
