Afternoon Tea @ MW Restaurant

Last month marked the inaugural Afternoon Tea event at MW Restaurant so of course we had to try it this month. Held on the 3rd Sunday of the month, the husband and wife team of Wade Ueoka and Michelle Karr-Ueoka serve several types of tea along with finger "sandwiches". And these aren't your run of the mill cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches. More like Tamarind BBQ Lamb or Tea Smoked Duck or Thai Beef. Along with eight different bite sized sweets. And it seems last month's menu was different from this month's menu. Our menu looked like this:

"Ham and Cheese"

Tea Smoked Duck

Ho Farms Tomato Saffron Gelee

"Crab Salad"

  Tokachi Azuki Bean Nacho

Hamakua Mushroom "Truffle" Beignet

"Thai" Beef Sandwich

The Mrs also opted for a couple of extras (not included in the $35 cost) including the:

Tamarind BBQ Lamb Sandwich ($5)

"Blini and Caviar" ($10)

And along with my Mango Peach tea, I also sampled the Green Tea Nagaishima ($8) with matcha green tea and Tyku citrus sake and soju. Then the girls favorites started, the sweets! (yes, I was one of only 5 men in the whole restaurant when we were seated). Our sweet menu looked like this:

Ho Farms Honey Tomato Tarte

"Milk and Honey"

"Waialua Coffee Pudding"

"Coconut Cake"

Lilikoi Macaroon Lollipop

"Strawberry and Azuki Bean Shortcake"

Meyer Lemon Meringue

Makaha Mango Cheesecake

And as usual once again, the Mrs selected a couple of sweets not on the main menu:

MW Ice Cream Sandwich ($2)

Black Truffle Caramel Truffles ($3)

And I also sampled a Feel the Beet with beet syrup, tequila, lime juice and other flavorings.

So was Afternoon Tea worth it? YOU BETCHA! About the only blip during teatime was the heat. It's been stifling enough with the ambient heat and humidity but MW's air conditioning seemed to be on its last leg... hence my consumption of cool refreshing beverages. My faves for the savories were the tomato gelee, mushroom beignets and BBQ lamb sandwich while my fave sweets were the tomato tarte, coffee pudding and milk and honey. But of course, if you secure a seat on Oct 19th, you may experience a whole new set of savories and sweets which makes for great marketing. You have to attend every month's event! Which I would do again anyway...
