We originally didn't plan on dining out especially since Mom was just discharged from her Rehab earlier in the day but since Sis flew in from Maui and would be with Mom, we decided to stop by Vino with the K's and K.
It was the monthly Ultimate BYOB at Vino but we were simply here for the regular menu. I uncorked my one bottle of Chapoutier Chateauneuf du Pape. What vintage you ask? No vintage or to be exact, multi-vintage. This was the last bottling of Chapoutier's multi vintage CDPs with wines ranging from 1988 to 1997 in one bottle. It had the typical initial hit of funkiness on the nose which lead to leather, stone and a touch of graphite with a pleasant palate flow and medium finish.
We then started with the traditional Uovo with Hamakua mushrooms and truffle oil on brown butter.
Along with the Special Pizza of the evening with salami and that perfect sunny side egg...
We also sampled the special Yaki-Okinawan Soba with mekajiki katsu from the Hiroshi side...
The Steamed Shinsato Farms Pork Belly also from Hiroshi...
And the girls sampled the Braised Pork Belly Ramen
And Mary's Organic Roasted Chicken from Vino
I also uncorked a bottle of 1978 Cos d'Estournel that initially had that characteristic green bean on the nose which gave way to tobacco, stone and old leather. More than 36 years old but still drinking quite nicely!
And since we were mainly having reds, we ordered the Vintage Steak from Vino
While E uncorked a 1999 Alessandro e Gian Natale Fantino Vigna dei Dardi Riserva Barolo. Loads of leather, licorice, dried cherry, stone and even a bit of tar. Moth filling to say the least with a very long finish.
I needed more vittles so I also ordered a plate of the Salumi and Cheese
While the girls had dessert
I ended with my usual Negroni perfectly shaken by Jacob
Then my French Brother requests a foie gras burger. "No can do" says Chef Keith since they don't have ground beef. "What about a foie gras steak sandwich"?... Lo and behold, Chef Keith creates the One and Only Sandwich with sliced Vintage Steak and seared foie gras. E's smile went from ear to ear!
That's why we'll always return to our home away from home...
