Ever since they opened about 18 months ago, MW Restaurant has kept their Regional Hawaii Cuisine concept fresh and alive seeking all facets of Hawaii's dining crowd. Along with their usual take on the 50th's ethnic flavors, they also are continuously hosting pop-up dinners with local and mainland chefs (the latest is recent Vintage Cave alum, Jonathon Mizukami) along with monthly Sunday Tea Time or various dessert themes. Today it was their Burgers and Shakes event from 11:00 to 3:00 featuring various burgers, shakes and desserts.
Of course since we're here with the governing board of the Palaka Wine Co, we had to start with a bottle of NV Camille Saves Rose Grand Cru Champagne from Bouzy...
And since Miles indulged in a bottle of 1961 Chateau Cheval Blanc with a fast food burger in Sideways, I too felt the Chef Ueoka's burgers also deserved a Bordeaux so I brought a 1983 Chateau Lynch Bages to enjoy with my burger. If you have a bottle, this baby in drinking in its perfect place right now with both green and dried tobacco, dried herbs and a hint of dried savory spice with a medium finish... I better uncork the rest of the case I have... who am I kidding, this was my only bottle...
V also uncorked a 1996 Williams Selyem Riverrock Vineyard Russian River Pinot Noir to balance his crab cake burger and the black summer truffles in our burgers... the wine just needed a little aeration to show its full potential - V was initially worried about the nose when he first uncorked it but that slight funk quickly blew off...
My Plain burger ($8) with the black summer truffle supplement ($10)... though there was a nice amount of truffle, the spice in the burger overwhelmed the fine truffle flavor though it was cooked perfect medium rare with good beefy flavor... one of the better burgers in the 50th...
We also order a load of fried side items including the Ho Farms Fried Okra ($5) with black pepper sauce...
The Crinkle Fries ($5)...
The BBQ Fries ($6)...
And the Fried Onion Rings ($7)...
Then the table had their desserts including the Mud Pie ($12)
Mochi Waffle Cone with Ice Cream ($5)
And Ice Cream Sandwich ($5)
While I simply had a gin based libation ($12) that I asked the mixologist to create. It was between a Nagai Shima and a Pineapple Pleasure with more lemon and lime but very refreshing after a rich burger and fried sides...
We rarely go out on Sundays especially if we're not already in town but these little brunches or lunches do recharge the batteries for the impending workweek. We do miss Michel's monthly Sunday brunches but if MW continues their changing Sunday theses... then we may have found a new venue... and spending time with adopted family is always great!
