Since we're doing the stay-cation thing again this year and didn't have any dinner reservations in the evening, we decided to sample the grub at Smith and Kings in Chinatown. Where is it located? Why at the corner of Smith St and King St... So if you still can't find it, you need to reboot your organic hard drive's GPS. We've passed it going to The Pig and the Lady multiple times when it simply was a dive bar in a previous life but now it's a updated gastropub.
What initially caught my eye was the poutine including a basic poutine, a poutine with duck and a Lobster Poutine with bechamel and Indiana goat cheese ($12). Okay, SOLD! The fries were a touch more overdone than I prefer but the creamy goat cheese was a nice change to the usual brown gravy and it did contain an adequate amount of lobster meat...
Of course we first need liquid refreshment including the Lychee Refresher ($5 non-alcoholic) for the Mrs...
And the Goose Island IPA ($6) on tap for me...
We decided to split an order of the Fuji Apple, Indiana Goat Cheese and Candied Walnuts with vanilla vinaigrette ($10)... (forgot to photograph) but it was a tasty salad with crisp apples, creamy goat cheese and a slightly sweet tasty vinaigrette...
Along with the "Foie Gras" Burger ($14)...
Our server said they recommend the burger cooked medium which is pink and cool center (that's actually medium rare) and it ended up between rare and medium rare though I normally like my burgers at that "doneness" or underdoneness so it didn't bother me. It had a nice hit of pate' flavor (as you can see, it's not really foie gras) though my only negative was the burger should have been given a little more char or browning to accentuate the beef flavor - it was closer in flavor to steak tartare (again, no complaint from me). The Mrs also enjoyed the meal as the burger, salad and poutine more than filled us up. We may be back to sample the variations of mac-n-cheese or the steak frites or cassoulet...
